Research Directions
The Institute of Hydrobiology of NAS of Ukraine is the leading scientific centre in Ukraine with extensive experience in comprehensive hydroecological, hydrobiological, ichthyological, biotechnological, and radiobiological studies of freshwater ecosystems of various types.
The Institute employs a team of highly qualified specialists who carry out research addressing current problems related to establishing the patterns of functioning of freshwater ecosystems under conditions of increasing anthropogenic pressure, assessing the quality of the aquatic environment and the factors that determine it, conserving the biodiversity of Ukrainian water bodies, and applying biotechnological approaches to the cultivation of commercially valuable aquatic organisms. The Institute is one of the leading scientific centres for freshwater biota research among similar institutions in Eastern and Central Europe.

Biodiversity and Monitoring
Study of biological diversity and the mechanisms of functioning of freshwater ecosystems as the basis for developing technologies for bioindication, monitoring, and management of the ecological status of aquatic objects.
Radionuclides and Chemical Pollution
Study of the physicochemical basis of the processes of migration, transformation, and biological effects of radionuclides and chemical contaminants on aquatic organisms, and the pathways for their regulation.
Ichthyofauna and Aquatic Resources
Assessment and forecasting of the state of ichthyofauna in water bodies of various types with the aim of rational utilisation of living aquatic resources and conservation of fish diversity.
Aquaculture and Biotechnology
Molecular-biological, cellular, and physiological studies of aquatic organisms as the basis for developing highly effective aquaculture technologies.
