About the Library

The history of the library is closely connected with the establishment of the institute itself. The first mention of the future institute library appears in the "Trudy Dneprovskoy biologicheskoy stantsii" (Proceedings of the Dnieper Biological Station) of 1914. M.O. Keppen, the first director of the station, bequeathed his entire natural history library to the Society of Nature Lovers. A small portion of it (32 copies) became the foundation of the station library.

The library is a major scientific library covering the following priority research areas: hydrobiological, radioecological, ichthyological, and biotechnological. All these areas are reflected in the library's catalogues and card indexes. The library's reference and retrieval apparatus includes subject headings such as aquaculture, mariculture, genetics of aquatic organisms (including fish genetics separately), hydrobiological typology of water bodies (rivers, small rivers, the Dnipro, Dnister, Desna, Danube, Southern Buh, reservoirs, canals, lakes, swamps, ponds), ecological forecasting, and warm-water fish farming.
